Decor and Sustainability

Decor is a very important element of design. It helps tell the story of the space, by adding layer, texture and visual value. What most people don’t know, is that we must be more conscious of our buying behaviour, especially with decor products. As they impact the quality of the environment of a space at a molecular level.

You may wonder how?

The choices we make in decor effects the consumption of energy and quality of life. Not only is it important to use natural and eco-friendly materials but also materials that are biodegradable.

Some furniture and decor pieces are treated with harmful chemicals, that release toxic gasses reducing the quality of air in a room. The health problems caused by these gasses are extremely severe and can dangerous.

What should be the criteria to choose decor?

  • Natural materials are the optimal choice, as they are biodegradable and they do not affect the air quality of a room.
  • The energy consumption: Light colours and reflective surfaces reduce artificial light consumption as they bounce light back into a room.
  • Look for pieces with clean structure and in neutral tones, as they are versatile, can be used all year round.
  • Opt for glass and porcelain instead of plastic and acrylic.
  • To add glitz and glam to a space use pieces made of brass, copper, chrome, silver and wrought iron.
  • For a more earthy look opt for materials such as marble, concrete, granite, quartz and terracotta.
  • Remember the quality of the product always outshines the quantity of product.Think long term, try and avoid the bandwagon of fast trends, because that isn’t sustainable.
  • Don’t be afraid to take your time and create and curate your style.
  • Last but not the least opt for plants, instead of faux/ artificial plants. They add a lot to your environment and space.

I do understand while saying this that redecorating space costs money, time and energy. But it is achievable, slowly but surely. All you have to do is assess the products you own and the new purchases you want to make. Always remember the choices you make and your spaces are also a reflection of you and it also affects your health.
